Unionize Everybody!

by Michael I. Niman

I’ve been listening to the litany of anti-union complaints echoing throughout the chatter that passes for news in this country. Foremost, it seems, is the complaint that union members, particularly in the public sector, enjoy “Cadillac” health insurance plans.

The Dirt on Nuclear Power

by Benjamin J. Sovacool

Japan’s nuclear crisis is a nightmare, but it is not an anomaly. In fact, it is only the latest in a long line of nuclear accidents involving meltdowns, explosions, fires, and loss of coolant—accidents that have occurred during both normal operation and emergency conditions, such as droughts and earthquakes.

Kia See Sharp: The 2011 Kia Optima

by Jim Corbran

Okay, I’m no musician, and I don’t know if that headline makes any sense musically. But I do know that the new Kia Optima does look sharp. If you liked its cousin the Hyundai Sonata, ladies (and gents) you’ll go ga ga over the new Optima.

Tax The Fat Cats

by Carl Mrozek

Last week in Wisconsin, score another one for the fat cats at the expense of the little guy—the firemen, cops, janitors, garbage collectors, highway crews, etc., all of the invisible folks who enable us to live our “normal lives.” The fat cats include the corporations and so-called “small businesses.”

Offbeat News

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

The lower house of Russia’s parliament approved legislation in February to classify beer, for the very first time, as an alcoholic beverage. Traditionally, because of the dominance of the vodka industry, beer has been regarded as closer to a soft drink.

Free Will Astrology

by Rob Brezsny

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): If I had to come up with a title for the next phase of your astrological cycle, it might be “Gathering Up.” The way I see it, you should focus on collecting any resources that are missing from your reserves.

Ask Anyone

I just got done whooping it up at the Mardi Gras parade and festivities last week. Had a hard time making it through work the next day. Now, St. Patrick’s Day is upon us. I’ll have a few beers with my Irish friends on Thursday. Then, Saturday is the Old Neighborhood Parade in South Buffalo—which is one of the most fun spectacles in the city, if you ask me.
