America is so rich that even a sprawled-out, hollowed-out, shrinking metro like Buffalo-Niagara Falls has been growing in both wealth and income over the past decade. The statistics of income, productivity, and overall economic activity here are profoundly positive notwithstanding our region’s loss of population.

SXSW: It’s that annual week in the middle of March when the Texas capital city of Austin briefly becomes the center of the music world. More than 2,000 bands, shows, and events run all day and into the wee hours of the morning, along with dozens of music industry panels and a trade show—and those are the just the “official” events, not including the thousands of other “non-SXSW-sanctioned” events.

You may or may not agree with the decision to remake Arthur, the 1981 comedy that starred Dudley Moore as an alcoholic millionaire given to bizarre pranks whose life is reformed when he falls in love with a working-class woman (Liza Minelli). But if ’twere to be done, you can’t fault the casting of Russell Brand, the bad boy of British comedy, in the title role.

I must say that after seeing photos of the new Ford Explorer in print and on the web, I assumed it was smaller than the previous model. Maybe it was its resemblance to the smaller Ford Edge that threw me off. Because the new Explorer is definitely bigger. Bigger and better, I might add.

It took a blown-out knee and coffee with Joel Giambra to lure Buffalo native Doug Curella back home, but now he’s here to stay. Curella managed Mark Grisanti’s unlikely campaign for the 60th State Senate District, which unseated the Democratic incumbent in a heavily Democratic district.

Gen. Than Shwe of Myanmar, leader of Asia’s most authoritarian regime, made a rare public appearance in February but dressed in a women’s sarong. Most likely, according to a report on AOL News, he was challenging the country’s increasingly successful “panty protests” in which females opposed to the regime toss their underwear at the leaders or onto government property to, according to superstition, weaken the oppressors.

My partner and I are thinking of taking a quick trip somewhere warm to make this brutal, tail end of winter a little bit more bearable. Cash is pretty tight, but we can swing a few days in the Caribbean somewhere, as long as it’s not too pricey. So I’ve been looking at package deals for a number of destinations, and the cheapest thing I’ve found is in Haiti. I think we all know why the discount. Should I feel guilty about that?
