Here We Go Again

by Buck Quigley

Last spring I suffered grievous slip-and-fall injuries as a result of all the glossy campaign mailers inserted through the mail slot in my front door during the final days of the at-large Buffalo school board election. Back then I learned that they had been sent out by a shadowy group called Buffalo Students First, which was bankrolled by the Buffalo Niagara Partnership to promote the slate of incumbents comprising Chris Jacobs, Florence Johnson, and Catherine Collins.

The 2010 Winners List

We couldn’t be more grateful for the tremendous turnout at Monday’s Best of Buffalo party at Town Ballroom. Thanks especially to Town Ballroom and its staff, and to all the restaurants who laid out a lavish spread for our guests.

News Analysis

Wealth Versus Society

by Bruce Fisher

The most telling chart in a new study of Wall Street’s role in the recent economic crash is the one that shows the trend-line for bonuses. Bonuses are those enormous end-of-year payouts to star bankers that make the rest of us wonder if there’s any connection between work and reward.

"Jersey Boys," "Zooma Zooma" and "The Goat"

by Anthony Chase

The national tour of Jersey Boys at Shea’s is everything you could possibly want it to be—energetic, passionate, visually stunning, and musically uplifting. The story of how four young guys from New Jersey overcame obstacles and personal strife to hit the top of the pop charts and achieved recording immortality as the Four Seasons is brilliantly told and marvelously affecting.

Sports Radio Dynamics

by Andrew Kulyk & Peter Farrell

Some people might react to last week’s news that Nick Mendola is switching radio gigs with a big “ho-hum.” After all, it’s just a radio personality, right? Some guy on the air who takes calls and reads scores and pontificates about our sports teams.

Blair Fowler, 16, delights her frenzied fans as a “haul queen,” inspirationally “shopping for glory” by smartly tearing through stores and then displaying and expertly describing her purchases on Internet videos. A March Times of London dispatch from Los Angeles noted Fowler’s acclaim “for her ability to deliver a high-pitched 10-minute lecture on the merits of skinny versus low-riding jeans, apparently without drawing breath.”

What’s the deal with anonymity on Web sites? Do we respect the need for people to preserve their anonymity when commenting on blogs and other sites, so that they may feel free to express their true feelings without fear of repercussions, or do we consider them cowards who flout the basic democratic principle that the accused should be able to face their accusers?
