There is great news from Norway, a country with limitless oil revenue and a pretty much uninhabitable interior. Norway will be host to an international conference later this fall that will bring together many experienced designers, planners, and developers to discuss good ideas about waterfront development.

The formula is simple: Convince the crème de la crème of indie, underground, hip-hop, and beyond to converge on a beatup old resort for three days, keep the capacity under 3,000 people, add some film screenings, a couple comedians, and some other events—and you’ve got yourself a festival.

As I do every year at this time, I come before you with a heavy heart to talk about some of the films I saw at the Montreal World Film Festival. Why so glum? It’s not that the films aren’t good—in fact, I enjoyed myself more this year than I have at any WFF since early in the decade.

At the very beginning of Christian Carion’s Farewell, an on-screen message informs us, “This film is based on events which led to the fall of the Soviet Bloc, putting an end to a world dominated by two opposing powers.” This sentence is hedged, but it does convey the film’s ambitious historical and narrative scope.

My computer’s dictionary defines fiesta as (in Spanish-speaking regions) “a religious festival,” and for the rest of us it’s “an event marked by festivities or celebration.” With the arrival of the 2011 Ford Fiesta in dealer showrooms, both definitions might just fit.

I work in an office with a shared refrigerator. Individual sandwiches and snacks seem to be left alone, but every time I bring in a box of soy milk it seems to disappear in 2 to 3 days. Since I only use it in a cup or two of coffee a day, this leads me to believe that others in the office are using it.
