Who is Doc Maelstrom?

The region’s political scorekeepers are making great sport of trying to identify the author of a blog which appeared in the last week of the 26th Congressional District Race: maelstrominwny.blogspot.com.

In a half dozen posts (and counting), Doc Maelstrom has savaged Erie County Executive Chris Collins and his political flunkies, Erie County GOP chairman Nick Langworthy and Collins’ chief of staff Chris Grant, who ran the failed campaign of Jane Corwin for Congress. He or she has described fissures within the local Republican Party. He or she has reported that Jane Corwin’s husband, Phil, is furious with Collins over the misdirection of her campaign, and that Michael Mallia, whose stalking of independent candidate Jack Davis on behalf of the Corwin campaign backfired miserably, has been fired as Corwin’s Assembly chief of staff. He or she has predicted that Collins and his staff have skeletons in their closets that Collins’ Democratic challenger, Erie County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz, is sure to exploit.

So who is Doc Maelstrom? How good is his inside information? And where does he or she get it? Is Maelstrom aligned with former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra, who is no friend to Collins? Is it a Democrat who has (or is pretending to have) an inside track on Republican squabbling?

Welcome to the election season.
