Round 3, Week 1: Sara Elizabeth vs. Paul Trinca

Congratulations to our Round 2 quarterfinal winners, The Funky Beets!

Congratulations to The Funky Beets! They collected the most votes at our live music showdown at Nietzsche’s this past Friday. With that win, they join The Etchings in our BOOM Grand Finale, where one band will walk off with all the marbles, and a big, fat cash prize!

This week features two more of the best original acts that have thus far submitted a photo, an original mp3, and filled out our rigorous questionnaire. Check out their sound below and cast a vote for the act you prefer. Each week, the popular online vote decides who proceeds to the next live show (Saturday, February 26 at Nietzsche’s) where four acts will square off in a no-holds-barred extravaganza of local original music.

That night at Nietzsche’s (21+), each audience member will be given one ballot on which to cast his or her vote for his or her favorite band. At the end of the night, when the tally is completed, only one will have won the right to perform in the Artvoice BOOM Grand Finale—the battle royale, winner-take-all live blowout where one talented act will walk away with unspeakable prizes, a handsome wad of cash, and the eternal privilege to proclaim themselves Artvoice BOOM Grand Champions!

This week, we give you Sara Elizabeth and Paul Trinca. Take a moment to meet them and listen to their music on this page. Finally, follow the link below to the ballots and cast ONE vote for the one you like best. Through the magic of the digital age, we will tabulate the voting and announce this week’s winner in next week’s print edition.

A word of warning however: Bands attempting to stuff the ballot by submitting multiple votes will be rooted out using the most sophisticated intelligence software available on the black market. (Well, okay, that’s a bluff, but if you try to fool our IT guy you will be caught. Just ask the FBI…he’s that good. And if that happens, you will be disqualified with nowhere to appeal our decision.)

If you're in a band and would like to enter BOOM for a shot at the $5,000 grand prize, visit boom.artvoice.com to find out how. In the meantime, check out this week’s contestants, and may the best act win.

When/where did the band form? I have been playing music since the age of nine, and spent four years in the folk-rock trio SIlhouette. Now a junior music major at UB studying music technology and composition, it is time to take my solo act to the next level.

You might like us if you like: Regina Spektor, Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, Feist, Imogen Heap

Best show played: My band played at Club Paradise last summer, and while it was not the biggest audience, they were very enthusiastic and the atmosphere very fun. We played with more energy than every before, and musically felt so tight. Every show should feel like that one.

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: I deserve to win BOOM! because my originality, not only in my music but in my personality, allows me to stand out in a music industry that thrives on authenticity. I have taken my passion for my music into every avenue of my life, and am always striving to find new outlets for my artistry.

When/where did the band form?

My act formed when I began writing original music in 2008 in South Buffalo, NY.

You might like us if you like: Radiohead, U2, Cake, Coldplay, Liars.

Best show played: The best show that I have played (and I’ve only played a few with my originals..still polishing my live act) had to be for a few hundred people at the newly renovated auditorium at Maryvale Senior High School. The best show in general had to be performing with my a cappella group The Buffalo Chips from the University at Buffalo when we were one of 6 groups in the world to make it to the 2010 ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella) Finals at the Lincoln Center in New York City. INSANE experience.

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: My "band" deserves to win BOOM! because people have claimed that my music makes them FEEL... I believe them, because I feel my music. I can only hope that with others' help, the conveying of this emotion is enough to take me to the top.
