The Week's Winners & Losers

Carny Folk

The State Dept. of Labor concluded on July 22 that Darien Lake ride operators were not properly trained and were responsible in the death of a veteran and double amputee on the Ride of Steel rollercoaster. While the decision carries no penalties you better believe a lawsuit is coming.

The First Amendment

About 250 people gathered at the steps of Buffalo City Hall on July 25 to exercise their cherished American right to free speech and voice protest against gay marriage. Yes, it makes me proud to live in a country where we are free to—hypothetically let’s say—call a group of protesters dicks without the fear of reprisal.

Game On

During a speech at Roswell Park on July 26, Gov. Andrew Cuomo bitchsmacked local leaders for their regional political squabbles, criticizing the internal rivalries and “parochialism” he says threaten Upstate’s ability to compete for state funding. Its almost as if this guy has no idea how things work around here...

American Inferiority

The Canadian dollar peaked at $1.06 against the U.S. dollar on July 26, reaching its’ highest value in almost four years. So, besides the fact that our outlet malls and roads will be further choked by obnoxious visitors, we now face the unfortunate reality of having a currency inferior to one graced by geese.

Moving Beyond the Past

During a speech at Roswell Park on July 26, Gov. Andrew Cuomo bitchsmacked local leaders for their regional political squabbles, criticizing the internal rivalries and “parochialism” he says threaten Upstate’s ability to compete for state funding. By the numbers...

Same-sex couples that were married en-masse on Goat Island at Niagara Falls State Park on the morning of July 25, the second day couples were legally allowed to wed in New York. The 92 brides and grooms, who came from across the state and country, were serenaded to a rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to begin the 30-minute ceremony.

Proposed fare increase—up to $2 on all Metro Rail and bus trips—outlined on July 25 and currently being considered by the NFTA to help close a projected $15 million budget hole next year. The NFTA last raised fares in 2009, jumping a quarter from $1.50 to the existing $1.75. Other revenue raising options being considering include reductions to bus service, selling of rights of way and increased parking fees at Buffalo Airport.

Post office locations—including 21 Western New York branches—that have been targeted for closure by the US Postal Service due to low foot traffic and retail sales. There are roughly 32,000 post office branches nationwide. Anyone who objects to a closing has 60 days to submit comments to the Postal Service. Despite cutting 110,000 jobs and reducing costs by $11 billion since 2008, the USPS still faces a deficit of $8.3 billion this year.
