 Tough Talk Stopping just short of calling WNY a bunch of whiny babies, Gov. Andrew Cuomo didn’t spare our feelings during his Feb. 4 speech at Daemen College. Claiming he was “sick and tired” of hearing about the “good old days,” Cuomo hoped to embolden voters to change government themselves. |
 Spaying and NeuteringThe Tonawanda Town Board unanimously passed a law on Feb. 7 to fine cat owners who let their pets to run free during their reproductive cycles, a measure intended to curb stray populations. I want to know whose job it’s going to be to run around town with a thermometer on Feline Fertility Patrol. |
 Exclusive InvitesIt’s not clear what dirt he has on the president (maybe some variant of a Kenyan birth certificate) but somehow Mayor Byron Brown earned an invite with roughly 200 politicians and celebrities to the watch the Super Bowl on Feb. 6 at the White House with the big guy himself. |
 Liberal Values We can forgive Congressman Chris Lee of Clarence for falling into lockstep with his fellow (small-government?) Republicans and voting to renew the Patriot Act on Feb. 8, but come on, Brian Higgins! We expected better. The bill failed but will likely pass by simple majority in the near future. |
 Conservative ValuesSpeaking of Chris Lee…On Feb. 9 the website Gawker obtained a shirtless photo and emails of the married Lee that he allegedly sent to a posting in the “Women Seeking Men” section of Craigslist. Lee denies the report, but I’m more shocked that for once a cheating Republican isn’t secretly gay. |

Percentage cut to the state parks budget proposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Despite the proposed $19 million reduction in funding, parks officials say that parks fees will not rise and no state parks will close, as happened last year to several parks across Western New York, including Woodlawn Beach and Knox Farm. |

Minutes of deliberation needed on Feb. 7 for an Erie County jury to convict Muzzammil Hassan of second-degree murder for the 2009 beheading his wife. The unanimous jury—composed of eight men and four women—sat through 14 days of the high profile case, but ultimately failed to buy Hassan’s claims of spousal abuse and self defense. During closing statements on Feb. 6, Hassan compared his experience to the struggles faced by Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. Hassan faces sentencing on March 9. |

Dollars that multi-billionaire New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg donated to charities last year. He was second only to George Soros, who donated $332 million. Bloomberg says he plans to eventually give away all of his $20 billion fortune. |
