CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)—Like Night of the Living Dead, this is a classic of low-budget regional filmmaking from an industrial filmmaker who (unlike George Romero) never made another movie. A woman survives a car wreck, but is trapped in a small town where she is haunted by apparitions. Screening Room

HEAVEN’S GATE (1980)—Once derided as the most expensive flop in Hollywood history, Michael Cimino’s bleak epic has seen its reputation restored in recent years. Set in 1890s Wyoming, the story concerns clashes between immigrant farmers and wealthy cattlemen who want to keep control of the land. Starring Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, Brad Dourif, Isabelle Huppert, Joseph Cotten, Jeff Bridges, and Ronnie Hawkins; look fast for Mickey Rourke and Willem Dafoe. IN GOD’S LAND—Documentary about a section of rural India where farmers are losing land they have worked for six generations because of collusion between a local temple and the government.
