Music Feature

Heart of the City

by Kevin J. Hosey

Put together a deadly disease/condition, a friend in need, about 20 musicians (including several Buffalo Music Hall of Fame members) with the number of bands and years of experience represented almost too high to count, one mystery man, and a few helpful friends, and you get a great benefit show.

Aye, Robot

by J. Tim Raymond

Looking at Candace Keegan’s work, in her current exhibit at Queen City Gallery, called Play, art patrons might breathe a sigh of relief—for who doesn’t like play? The word’s definitions takes up the best part of two columns in the Oxford English Dictionary: to occupy, to amuse, to perform, to compete, to touch gently, to win favor, to take foolish risks, the spontaneous activity of children or animals, and on and on.

Theater Week

The Clean House

by Anthony Chase

It can be difficult for Buffalo to become familiar with up-and-coming playwrights, even those who are nationally prominent. Sarah Ruhl’s The Clean House opens this week at Road Less Traveled. It is only the second play by the celebrated author to be seen in Buffalo.

Stagefright

Sarah Gilbert (pictured above), creator and executive producer of TV’s The Talk, recently announced on the show that she is engaged to marry rock musician Linda Perry, former lead singer of 4 Non-Blondes. Felder Times Four

by Jan Jezioro

The Tuesday. April 23 premiere at 7:30pm in Slee Hall of UB professor of composition David Felder’s Les Quatre Temps Cardinaux is the focal point of a two-day program that marks the start of a new university tradition called the Signature Series, celebrating UB’s legacy of innovation and distinction in arts and letters.

Film Feature

The Wrecking Crew

by M. Faust

I don’t care how many Grateful Dead shows you saw over the years, or how many Jimi Hendrix outtakes you’ve downloaded, or how many Led Zeppelin bootlegs you have. Unless you’ve spent you life listening to those in a cave, the guitarist whose work you have probably listened to the most is Tommy Tedesco.

What Happens Here

by Jack Foran

Three new videos in the Channels: Stories from the Niagara Frontier series will be premiered tonight (Thursday, April 18) at the Market Arcade Film & Arts Center, beginning at 7pm. The Channels series is an ongoing project of Squeaky Wheel that matches local videographers and community groups whose stories need telling.

Honey, I Shrunk the Altima

by Jim Corbran

Just how much does the new Nissan Sentra look like the almost-as-new Altima? In the back lot of Mike Barney Nissan, in a row filled with some of each, I got into a new Altima instead and didn’t even realize it right away until I reached for the seat adjuster and realized that what should have been a manual handle was a power button.

Dispatches: War of 1812

We Shall At Least Die With Some Grace

by Mason Winfield

Agriculture and preindustrial war have at least one thing in common: They start in the spring. The season of 1813 commenced on the Niagara with both combatants at an apparent stalemate. No forts had changed hands, and no land had new owners. But situations and prospects were different.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

To counter the now-well-publicized culture of rape in India, three engineers in Chennai said in March that they are about to send to the market women’s anti-rape lingerie, which will provide both a stun-gun-sized blast of electricity against an aggressor and a messaging system sending GPS location to family members and the police about an attack in progress.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I’m happy to report that help from the invisible world is available to you right now. Of course you won’t be able to use it, let alone tune in to it, if you don’t believe there is any such thing as help from the invisible world.
