A daytrip to North Tonawanda

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of Western New York, a day trip to North Tonawanda might be for you. Oliver Street has some of the most unique and surprisingly affordable antique shops in the area. The Lumber City Coop (230 Oliver Street), a refurbished hardware store, is a building filled with dozens of antique vendors. You can find beautiful pottery, vintage toys, old furniture, and clothes in excellent condition. If you’re feeling nostalgic from all the 1950s memorabilia, check out the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum (180 Thompson Street). Founded in 1915, the Allan Herschell Company manufactured over 3,000 hand-carved carousels for customers throughout the world, out-producing all its competitors. The museum teaches guests how the history of North Tonawanda was greatly influenced by this industry. The museum is filled with wooden sculptures and carvings of unusual animals. Guests can actually ride one of the carousels and hear music from the original Wurlitzer organ. If you’re looking for something more active, Niagara Climbing Center (1333 Stad Avenue) should be your next stop. The center has over more than 30 rope stations and 6,000 square feet of climbing space. There’s a variety of difficulty levels making it an ideal place for both beginners and more advananced climbers. For a great evening stop after a busy day of walking or climbing, check out Smoke on the Water (77 Young Street) for some fantastic BBQ and mac and cheese on the patio.
