Griffis Sculpture Park

Whimsy in the woods

If you’ve ever seen images of your friends draped over a giant metal praying mantis or sitting inside the profile of an enormous human face, it’s likely they were at Griffis Sculpture Park. The whimsical park is home to more than 250 giant, interactive sculptures, and is one of the oldest and largest sculpture parks in the United States.

While I highly recommend you take advantage of the park’s adult jungle gym capabilities, it can also be the perfect spot for serious hikers. Griffis has miles of marked trails that seem forgotten by the rest of the park. As you travel off the main path you will notice smaller sculptures scattered throughout the woods. Altered tree stumps, small sculpted mushrooms, and stone snails act as reminders you’re still in the park, no matter how far you’ve trekked. At times it may even becomes difficult to distinguish what is real and what had been created.

Each sculpture at Griffis was built with careful consideration of its location. The subtle play on natural elements is fascinating and the trails seem boundless. This summer I suggest packing a lunch and spending hours getting lost in the woods. Its a great way to get some exercise while having a truly amazing adventure.
