Going Flat

by Dave Staba

They may have a new coach, quarterback, running back, two-fifths of a new offensive line and a new attitude in all phases of the game.

The Buffalo Bills, however, clearly have not figured out the single most-imposing obstacle to the postseason lo these last 15 years:

Comedy Interview

A chat with Bill Maher, who performs at Shea's this Saturday

by Peter Soscia

For over two decades, comedian Bill Maher has been at the center of political humor. Despite having had massive success in television, movies, and books, Maher still goes back to his roots in standup comedy performing shows across the country. On Saturday he’ll be at Shea’s Performing Arts Center for an 8pm performance. This week Artvoice talked with Maher about where his career in stand up comedy, his feelings on the PC culture we live in, and standing up for (and to) liberal beliefs.

Cheyenne Jackson is next in what has been a lavish roster of Broadway personalities to perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in recent years. He’s bringing his “Music of the Mad Men Era” show, an update of his sold out 2011 Carnegie Hall concert.

Theater Review

For Heaven's Sake

by Anthony Chase

The virtues of Laura Pedersen’s play, For Heaven’s Sake, which opens the season at 710 Main Theatre are apparent. The playwright has a true gift for comedy and her funny bone is unmistakably connected to her Buffalo-born heart.

The Buffalo Chamber Players will celebrate their new status as Ensemble-in-Residence at the Albright Knox Art Gallery with the inaugural concert of their Thursday evening four concert series on October 1 at 8pm. The BCP had a happy home at the Buffalo Seminary for the previous eight seasons, but BCP founding artistic director Janz Castelo felt that it was the right time to make a move.

When is a Story not About a Kid, a Clock, or a Bomb?

by Buck Quigley

On the afternoon of September 17, Artvoice System Administrator Anthony DiPasquale posted a story on the Artvoice blog entitled “Reverse Engineering Ahmed Mohamed’s Clock...and Ourselves.” It’s a thoughtful piece in which he follows his own curiosity as an electronics tinkerer, and pieces together a convincing narrative to demonstrate how 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed likely cobbled together the “invention” that triggered an international debate.

Beers at the Ballpark

by Erik Wollschlager

On Saturday (9/26) Buffalo will once again host some of North America’s best breweries for the Sixth Annual Ballpark Brew Bash. From 5-8pm, Coca-Cola Field will become the temporary home of nearly 60 breweries and 4,000 attendees. Among the more notorious breweries that will be bringing their finest brews to Buffalo are Prairie, Green Flash, and Stillwater, but the list certainly doesn’t end there.

What's Brewing?

Presented by Consumer Beverages

by Erik Wollschlager and Chris Groves

Ihad the pleasure of trying Pearl Street Grill & Brewery’s Scrum Dunkel today, along with several friends and esteemed colleagues as we watched history being made at the Buffalo Beer Week press conference. The traditional German wheat beer was brewed with malts from WNY’s own NY Craft Malt, in partnership with the Buffalo Rugby Club—the second such collaboration between the Rugby Club and Pearl Street’s Chris Herr.

Phonogram, vol 2: The Singles Club

by Michael Hoffert Jr.

Music is magic. A single song, chorus, lyric or note can bring a flood of emotions and memories, feelings both forgotten and yet to be experienced, that pound through your brain like the kinetic guitar work of a 1970s British punk band.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

A teenage girl in Wyandotte, Michigan, using $9.95 tools from a website called FakeABaby.com, pretended for months to be pregnant (with abdomen extenders and ultrasound photos of her “triplets”). She received gifts, had a baby shower, joined expectant mother groups and even frightened her 16-year-old boyfriend enough that he began looking for full-time work to feed the soon-due “babies.”

Free Will Astrology

by Rob Brezsny

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “I feel like a wet seed wild in the hot blind earth,” wrote author William Faulkner. Some astrologers would say that it’s unlikely a Libra would ever say such a thing—that it’s too primal a feeling for your refined, dignified tribe; too lush and unruly. But I disagree with that view.
