Holiday Book Sale

Need to find the perfect gift for your favorite book lover—or maybe yourself? Why not shop local at Talking Leaves...Books. Don’t know what fits your current reading needs? Just take a look at the Staff Picks shelf for inspiration. Talking Leaves’ unique collection of books has been bringing new worlds and perspectives to the bookish beings of Buffalo and Western New York for over 30 years. Their selection is bound to fit your needs if you long for to the new, the old, the idiosyncratic, the unusual, the marginal, and much more.

Talking Leaves... Books on Elmwood
Sculpture by Liz Lessner

This hand-picked collection has been supplying the community with the books that deepen our self-awareness and understanding of the world we live in; their selection has helped us through hard times and new experiences, while taking us on a journey through an array of cultures and experiences; and their selection has brought us much joy.

This week, you will have two opportunities to celebrate the holidays with Talking Leaves. They will host their 28th annual Holiday Open House on Saturday (12/5) at the Main Street store from 10am-8pm. Your second chance is on Tuesday (12/8) at the Elmwood location from 10am-9pm. Members receive their normal 10 percent off of books plus an additional 10 percent on books, cards, calendars, and sale books! (However, special ordered books and periodicals do not receive the additional 10 percent. There is also no gift wrapping on the day of the sale).

Come out and support their local independent business this holiday season—as a token of appreciation.

Exhibit and Chapbook Launch

On Saturday (12/5), CEPA Gallery, the UB Graduate Poetics Group, and the UB Department of Media Study will host a book launch for Declan Gould’s new chapbook, Model Figure (Shirt PocketPress). This chapbook lures the reader in with the voice of Caroline Bergvall: “The value of dislocation, of being disoriented, which calls on more movement, is part of the process of orientation.” Declan Gould meets us in the middle of the body to orient and carry us through the end. Declan Gould received her M.F.A. in Poetry in 2013. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Poetics at the University at Buffalo.

Joining the poet will be Liz Lessner, who provided the cover art for the chapbook. Liz’s work will be on display. She has exhibited her sculptures in group and two person exhibitions in Oregon, Michigan, New York, and Mexico. She has shown her work at Collision Machine, Brooklyn Artist Gym, 3rd Ward, and A.I.R. Gallery (Artists in Residence), the first cooperative for women artists in the United States. Highlights include the two-person show “Common China” at 3rd Ward, Brooklyn, and two group shows with Supporting Women Artists Project (SWAP) at Brooklyn Artists Gym and A.I.R. gallery.

The event will take place 8-11pm at Big Orbit, 30 D Essex Street. Books will be available for $4. And I hear there will be roasted chestnuts and mulled cider.
