The fabulous stage and movie star Debbie Reynolds (pictured above) received this year’s Life Achievement Award at the annual SAG ceremony held on January 25th. At 82, she has no intention to retire. She received a 1973 Tony nomination for her Broadway debut in the musical Irene. Her only Oscar nomination was for the 1964 movie The Unsinkable Molly Brown, based on the 1960 Broadway musical. In the late ‘80s Reynolds toured the country with that show (with an added beginning that made it into a flashback) and made a stop at Shea’s. The 1952 musical movie classic Singin’ in the Rain made her a star.

Speaking of Singin’ in the Rain, the stage adaptation of the movie will be presented at Lancaster Opera House, April 10th-26th, directed by David Bondrow, starring John and Tara Kaczorowski, and John Leary. Bondrow will also direct the theater’s Curtain Up show, the musical Monty Python’s Spamalot. Curtain Up 2015 will be on September 18th.

This year will be the last one for Second Generation Theatre to be in residence at the New Phoenix. For its fourth season, the company will be performing at the Lancaster Opera House. In January 2016 they will present Christopher Durang’s Tony Award winning play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike followed by the musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in June 2016. In the meantime, the drama Orphans opens next week at the New Phoenix, followed by the musical The Wild Party in June. The latter, directed and choreographed by Michael Walline.

The Irish Classical Theatre company continues its season (February 27-March 22) with After Miss Julie, Patrick Marber’s adaptation of Strindberg’s classic Miss Julie. Directed by Fortunato Pezzimenti, the production will star Kate LoConti, Christopher Evans, and Anne Roaldi. After a very successful run this season with Death of a Salesman, the company plans on revisiting Arthur Miller in 2016 with All My Sons.

Greg Natale, who helmed Salesman, will now direct Anna Kay France’s The Un-American at Subversive. He takes over for Susan Forbes. The production will star Richard Lambert, Lisa Vitrano, and Guy Wagner taking over for the previously announced Phil Knoerzer.

Road Less Traveled concludes its current season with the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner Water by the Spoonful by Quiara Alegria Hudes (May 1st-24th). Directed by Scott Behrend, the production will star Victoria Perez, Sara Kow Falcone, Anthony Alcocer, Jonathan Foreman, Dave Hayes, Monish Bhattacharya, and Sarielys Matos. The company has announced its 2015-16 season which includes two world premieres, Speed of Light by Bella Poynton, and Safe by Donna Hoke. The season will also include Appropriate, Freud’s Last Session, and Farragut North which was the basis for the George Clooney film The Ides of March. The Santaland Diaries will return in December, reportedly a change in cast.

Torn Space Theater (TST) will return in March for its twelfth season with Eugene O’Neill’s drama The Hairy Ape, directed by Dan Shanahan, starring Patrick Moltane, Christopher Guilmet, Eliza Vann, Jessica Wegrzyn, and Jon Joy. And what would a TST season be without a site-specific Shanahan spectacle? They Kill Things goes on August 13-22 at Silo City.

Musicalfare, now presenting Buddy, will conclude its 25th season with the return of another past hit, Sisters of Swing: The Andrews Sisters Musical. Once again directed and choreographed by Doug Weyand, the show will now star Renee Landrigan, Michele Marie Roberts, and Wendy Hall as Patty, Maxine, and Laverne. The show opens on July 8th and will also star Phil Farugia and Nicholas Lama. Speaking of past hits, the company plans to remount the very popular Pageant next season. And this being the year of Andrew Lloyd Webber, why not Evita?

Broadway stars Cheyenne Jackson (September 26th) and Jason Alexander (October 17th) will be performing with the Buffalo Philharmonic next season. Buffalo’s own Eric Jordan Young will be performing on April 30th with his show Celebrating Sammy: Broadway to Vegas. A Broadway veteran and Vegas star, Young premiered his show Sammy and Me in the 2005-06 season at Musicalfare.

A.R. Gurney will receive the Dramatist Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award on February 23rd at The Harvard Club in New York. Elizabeth Swados’ new musical The Nomad premieres at The Flea in New York this month. The Flea has premiered several of Gurney’s plays in the past years.

The fabulous Elaine Stritch (pictured below) would have turned 90 on February 2nd. Stritch died on July 17th, 2014.
