Letters to Artvoice

Though the Hezbollah attack on the IDF post inside of Israel’s border and the subsequent capture of two Israel soldiers were violations of international law, so too was the 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon that followed Israeli’s massive bombing of Lebanon more than 20 years ago. Hezbollah emerged out of the deadly smoke and carnage of a devastated country which continues to mourn the deaths of thousands of civilians, victims of the 1982 bombing of Lebanon. Many Lebanese—Christian and Muslim—view Hezbollah as a resistance force, as does the European Union.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Travel writer Bruce Chatwin walked around Australia as he researched and meditated on the indigenous people’s beliefs about what the land was like in the ancient past. He wrote: “Aboriginal creation myths tell of the legendary totemic beings who wandered over the continent in the Dreamtime, singing out the name of everything that crossed their path—birds, animals, plants, rocks, waterholes—and so singing the world into existence.” Given the fact that you’re now primed to create a new domain or two, Leo, may I suggest the aborigines’ approach? You’ll infuse everything with extra beauty if you play around with singing it into existence.

Buffalo-Style Collecting

by Kat Brady

This week, the Buffalo News reported that our region has come under fire as one of the top 10 debt-collection hubs in the country. Complaints filed with the Fair Trade Commission have repeatedly shown cases of verbal and emotional abuse by collectors, ranging from threats to debtors’ homes and jobs, to ominous warnings of impending legal action, many of which are simply not true. Some debts are exaggerated greatly or even completely fabricated. The FTC reports receiving 500 calls from angry and upset citizens throughout the county targeted specifically at aggressive collectors within this region in the last year alone. And with more than 40 agencies operating around the area, it is no wonder a recent article in New Jersey’s Randolph Reporter coined the phrase “Buffalo-style collecting,” synonymous with tough tactics.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

■ Allen Heckard filed a lawsuit in Hillsboro, Ore., in June against Michael Jordan and Nike founder Phil Knight for $416 million each, charging that they are responsible for his “pain and suffering” and his “defamation,” in that nearly every day for 15 years, people have mistaken him for Jordan. Heckard admits to being a pretty good basketball player (though six inches shorter than Jordan) and to wearing Air Jordans, and in fact curiously told KGW-TV that, all in all, being recognized as Jordan was a “positive” thing. He said he arrived at the “416” figure from multiplying his age by seven (though he appears to be in his 30s, not 59). (Needless to say, Heckard filed the lawsuit without benefit of a lawyer.)

Olga Karman

What’s in Scatter My Ashes Over Havana? It’s a story. It’s my story inserted or woven into history: Cuban history and US history; the Cuban Revolution, the Cuban diaspora, my Harvard days in the ’60s, my developing a Hispanic consciousness later on here in the US. It’s the story of a Cuban girl who had American dreams, big American dreams. And those dreams, of course, included everything she had seen in the matinees at the Miramar movie theater.

Theater at Chautauqua

by Anthony Chase

The Chautauqua Theater Company is the resident professional theater and conservatory of the Chautauqua Institution. Now in its 23rd season, the company works with a resident company of 16 young actors from some of the best drama programs in America, and with principle players brought in to play featured roles. Under the leadership of co-artistic directors Vivienne Benesch and Ethan McSweeny, the programming has become increasingly challenging and wide-ranging, more in keeping with the mission of the venerable Chautauqua Theater Company itself.

Bobby Goes Splat!

by Donny Kutzbach

Imagine if you will Comedy Central’s Daily Show correspondent Rob Corddry roaming the woods with a paintball gun and a purpose. This is what happens in the mock documentary (à la This Is Spinal Tap and the rest of the Christopher Guest oeuvre) Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story, the cult-worthy film just out on DVD. Co-writer/producer Brian Steinberg, a UB graduate, spoke to Artvoice about the film, his years in Buffalo and how to script for unscripted television.
