Lymbyc System

Making post-rock instrumentals that recall the beats and bleeps folktronica of Four Tet or the glitch-hop artists on the Morr Music label, Lymbyc Systym weaves lots of sound into tightly folded melodic compositions. Utilizing various computers, effects, banks of synths and drums, the duo walks the line between rhythmic excursions and intricate harmonic experimentation in a totally original way. Check them out at Soundlab tonight, Thursday (Feb. 22) at 9pm. Opening are Bubblecore shoegazer artists Relay, with Sleeping Kings of Iona.

The Big Sleep

One of the newest arrivals on the hip French Kiss Records, The Big Sleep is a Brookyn trio that collides psychedelia and early 90s shoegaze with enormous oceans of sound. Awash with reverb and delay, their songs are layers of celestial feedback and distortion, schizophrenic drumming and the occasional haunting vocals of bassist Sonya Balchandani. Their label debut Son Of The Tiger has been getting rave reviews in the underground press, a hypnotic drone piece that invokes memories of My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive without sacrificing its individuality. The Big Sleep performs at Mohawk Place on Friday (Feb. 23) at 10pm. They will be playing with the new rejuvenated Besnyo as well as Mark Nosowicz (of The Old Sweethearts) and Alex Berkely.

Scott Celani

Scott Celani (pictured) plays at Nietszche’s this Friday (Feb. 23) with Last Days of Radio, who will play one last gig before taking some much needed time off to work on writing some new material. They don’t expect to play again until summer, so get your fix before the hibernation begins. Friday will be a busy night at Nietszche’s, with Celani, LDOR and Hooks & Halos playing the late show starting at 10pm. Prior to that the bar is hosting its annual “Harrisongs!,” a tribute to the late George Harrison featuring the Groveling Pilsburys, at 6pm.

The Town Pants

Post-Mardi Gras blues got you down? Never fear! The buildup to St. Patrick’s Day (the next great drinking holiday on the calendar) picks up on Friday (Feb. 23) at 8pm, when the Town Pants drop down to the Buffalo Irish Center for some spirited merriment. The Vancouver based celtic folk-rock band is on tour in support of their third album Weight of Words (Maximum Music/Universal). The title track was recently included on What the Shite, Vol. 2, a compilation released by celtic rock website www.shitenonions.com. Reports from last year’s Great Blue Heron Music Festival were filled with praise for this raucous band featuring beautiful fiddler Virginia Schwartz. And when you wake up Saturday afternoon after seeing this show, you’ll only have three more weeks to wait until the big green parade.

Chimaira

Ohio-based rock band Chimaira may be leading the new wave of American heavy metal, and by shying away from current metal trends and embracing change they appear to be off to a good start. Their latest project, Resurrection (due out on Ferret Records in March) is said to be their darkest yet. Lyrics trace three themes – rejection, revenge, and repercussion, and the prevalent guitar solos are representative of the band’s current motivations. All in favor of an ‘80s revival? Chimaira will be playing at the Dome Theatre on Sunday night (Feb 25) along with Killswitch Engage, Dragonforce, and He Is Legend. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Rob Crow

In addition to being the front man of the increasingly successful rock band Pinback, San Diego-based musician Rob Crow is also an accomplished solo artist. He’s just embarked on a North American tour promoting the release of his third solo effort, Living Well (Temporary Residence). Fans of Pinback will recognize the similarities in musical style, however Crow’s solo work is leaps and bounds ahead of many of Pinback’s arrangements. Crow is successful in creating both catchy and thoughtful lyrics that make him seem funny and likeable, especially with song titles like “I Hate You, Rob Crow.” Crow comes to Soundlab on Tuesday (Feb. 27) for a 9pm show

JP Soul

“Smack Thursdays” at Club Marcella features a host of house DJs and drink specials every week, but next Thursday (March 1) the club will welcome special guest DJ JP Soul, a fixture on the Buffalo party circuit for the past 12 years. After getting caught up in the rave scene during the early ‘90s, JP Soul and partner/friend Chad Mitchell started Smack Thursdays as a way to breathe life into the scene on a weekly basis. Shortly thereafter, the two packed up their belongings and headed to San Francisco, where they have been working clubs, recording their own music and running the Roam Recordings record label. Now JP Soul’s back in Buffalo and running the show again for a special event that you won’t want to miss. Doors open at 11pm
