New McKinley H.S. Allegations

Just when it seemed that the ongoing controversy at McKinley High School could not get any more shocking, Artvoice obtained a letter dated March 4, 2008 written by Buffalo Board of Education Vice President of Executive affairs Ralph Hernandez, addressed to Richard P. Mills, New York State Commissioner of Education. The letter was copied to Superintendent James Williams and the Buffalo Board of Education.

Food Not Bombs

by Peter Koch

Tucked away in the shiny, industrial kitchen at the back of Elmwood’s Unitarian Universalist Church, three volunteers—Megan, Amanda and Dave—are clanging and banging away, preparing a moveable feast. This particular feast—a steaming vat holding five pounds of spaghetti, several loaves of garlic bread, roasted potatoes, baked apples, fruit salad and piping hot tea—was considered trash only last night. Thanks to the work of these volunteers, this afternoon it will feed nearly two dozen people.

News of The Weird

■ A 16-year-old boy was arrested in Toronto in February after he emerged from a CIBC bank with about $150,000 (Cdn) stuffed in a sack. Despite numerous Hollywood movies emphasizing the need for speed in a bank robbery, the kid had dawdled inside for more than 45 minutes after the silent alarm had been pressed, collecting cash not only from the vault and tellers, but from customers, and by the time he walked out, the bank was surrounded by cops.

Mixed Colors

by Lucy Yau

There’s a certain art to the creation of a mixed tape, as expounded in Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity. One has to keep in mind the intended effect on the listener. There’s a mood and overall tone that needs to be set.

Theaterweek

“I took a poll on Super Tuesday. That week was heavy with auspicious events. I discovered that more students saw the Super Bowl than voted. More took advantage of Mardi Gras festivities. This is their comfort zone. So I see it as my role to show them why we are at this watershed in history. I must explain to them how we got to this point in history. In fewer than 40 years, they will have to answer the same question to future generations.”

The Kindness of Strangers

by George Sax

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was back in Israel last week, once again promoting the Bush administration’s no-brainer, non-starter Palestinian-Israeli peace initiative. She arrived in time for the latest flare-up of tit-for-tat, cross-border violence. (Of course, the Israeli tat is usually more devastating than the Palestinian…well, you know what I mean.)

Free Will Astrology

by Rob Brezsny

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “The moon asked me to meet her in a field tonight,” wrote mystic poet Hafiz (translated by Daniel Ladinsky). “I think she has amorous ideas.” You might soon feel a similar suspicion, Virgo. According to my reading of the astrological omens, seductive offers will be coming your way, and not just from the moon. Secret suitors may emerge from the shadows. Temptations could lure you toward the far ends of your imagination. The sheer profusion of invitations you’ll receive might make you giddily agitated.
