Move The Market
by Joseph H. Radder
I found it hard to believe that you wrote three pages about the Broadway Market (“What the Market Will Bear,” Artvoice v7n26), including “What the [Market’s] future might look like” without mentioning the only thing that will save it—move it.
Not to the waterfront as Sam Hoyt suggests, but to an already thriving location like Hertel Avenue or the Elmwood Village.
To suggest the market can help revive Polonia is to ask the tail to wag the dog. The only thing that will revive Polonia is to persuade thousands of people of Polish descent to move back from the suburbs to live again in the Broadway-Fillmore area. An impossible dream!
Those who would save the market should be applauded, but they should pay attention to the basic retailing tenet…location, location, location.
