Prosecuting George W. Bush

The following letters are in response to "The Prosecution of George W. Bush, originally printed in December 12th's Artvoice.

As a father whose son just began his third tour in Iraq, I find Vincent Bugliosi’s case for charging George W. Bush with murder most compelling. The noted prosecutor and author correctly, I believe, characterizes Bush’s detachment from the rest of the country as sociopathic. I read your interview with Bugliosi a day or so after hearing former evangelical Frank Schaeffer, author of “Crazy for God,”on Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Schaeffer, whose evangelical parents were friends of the elder Bushes, recalled his mother’s surprise when it was announced that aimless George W. was seeking the White House. Schaeffer noted Bush’s parodying of Karla Faye Tucker’s plea for mercy before her execution as evidence he was unfit for the presidency. That glibness is only one of the many traits typical of sociopathy or psychopathy. Superficial charm, lack of remorse, lack of empathy, pathological lying, callousness, and failure to accept responsibility for one’s actions are all indicators of some kind of personality disorder. All have been amply demonstrated by George W. Bush.

While impeachment was the constitutional remedy Congress lacked the wherewithal to pursue, I’ve long said to my friends my preference is to see Bush and Cheney on trial in the Hague. But I would settle for a good murder trial. Now that--finally-- OJ Simpson is out of the spotlight, we could use another trial of the century. It would be interesting to see if the insanity defense worked.

I regret to inform you that I have read my last issue of Artvoice! I picked up the current issue, but did not even glance at the cover until I returned home. I am sorry to say that your lack of taste and manners is more than I can handle. To depict our current president as you did is an insult to all Americans. Regardless of your feeling about the man, he deserves our respect because he is the president. To depict him in prison garb is unacceptable!

Shame on you!
