ETC:

CASABLANCA (1941)—Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in what is by general consensus Hollywood’s greatest romance, if not the all-around most popular Hollywood film period. Call it a miracle of studio craftsmanship, a whole that far exceeds the sum of its parts, and an almost mythological example of why we love movies so much. Directed by Michael Curtiz. With Paul Heinreid, Claude Reins, Peter Lorre. Thurs 14th 4:45PM, 7 & 9:15pm; Fri 15th 7 & 9:15pm The Screening Room, Northtown Plaza in the Century Mall, 3131 Sheridan Drive, Amherst 837-0376

THE KITE RUNNER—Adaptation of the international best selling novel about an Afghan man living in the United States who decides to return home to set to rest a childhood trauma. Starring Khalid Abdalla, Atossa Leoni and Shaun Toub. Directed by Marc Forster (Monsters Ball). Sat 8pm; Tue 7:30pm. Fredonia Opera House, 9 Church St. Fredonia (716-679-0891) www.fredopera.org

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1957)—Billy Wilder’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s hit play about a sensational murder trial, in which the wife of a man accused of murder agrees to testify against him. Tyrone Power and Marlene Dietrich get top billing but the movie belongs to Charles Laughton as the lawyer who comes out of retirement to defend the case: he chews the scenery so effectively (with the aid of his wife, Elsa Lanchester, as his fretful nurse) that you have to wonder if Wilder’s notion was that he distract viewers from the mechanics of the plot. Not top-drawer Wilder, but still first-rate entertainment. Tues. 7 pm, Market Arcade Film and Arts Center, 639 Main St. (855-3022). Presented as part of the Buffalo Film Seminar.
