Why Pigeon Matters

by Jeremy Toth

In 2008, I publicly complained about Tom Golisano, Steve Pigeon, and Responsible New York illegally coordinating with individual political campaigns. I remain convinced that the felony of coordination did occur, though no DA has formally taken up the case yet. I will continue to write and complain until something definitive happens.

Baltic Sea to Buffalo

by Jennifer Mogensen

It was nearly four decades ago that two teenagers met on the Baltic Sea and fell in love. More than 35 years later, that couple now calls Buffalo their home.

Not Quite a Still Life

by Becky Moda

I have been waitressing for several years, through undergraduate school, graduate school, a professional career as a curator, and most recently just because I enjoy my co-workers so much. It provides quick gratification—nothing beats walking out of work with a full pocket of cash.

Classical Music

Musical Movement

by Jan Jezioro

When the late Ramsi Tick, owner of the QRS Music Rolls Company, decided to put on a classical music concert series, his goal was to bring to town the finest artists in the classical firmament, in performance settings apart from the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Boom Round 3 Week 1: Psylensol vs. Photos of Wagons

CONGRATULATIONS to Hunger Anthem for collecting the most votes at our live battle of the bands at Nietzsche’s this past Friday. With that win, they secure a spot on our B.O.O.M. Long Live the Restoration

by Anthony Chase

Buffalo is fortunate that our close proximity to Southern Ontario ensures first-rate productions of classic plays at the Stratford and Shaw festivals. Without leaving Western New York, however, the best bet for seeing the classics on a regular basis is college and university programs.

5 Qustions With...

Jim Ostrowski: Lawyer, Writer, Anti-politician

Once upon a time, attorney Jim Ostrowski was a good liberal Democrat—a McGovern man, even. But his exposure to and activism in Buffalo politics, coupled with undergraduate explorations into libertarian political philosophy, changed all that.

Everybody's Fine

by M. Faust

Remember Cinema Paradiso? Sure you do, a tasteful, cultured, perspicacious reader like you. It may well even be one of your favorite movies. Do you remember director Giuseppe Tornatore’s followup film?

Relatively Inexpensive American Transportation

by Jim Corbran

At first I was going to name this column “Cheap American Rides.” But the word “cheap” isn’t always the most flattering. Like “cheap date,” or “running an NFL team on the cheap.” “Inexpensive” just sounds better.

Offbeat News

News of the Weird

In October in Orange County, Calif., Billy Joe Johnson, who had just been convicted of murder as a hit man for a white supremacist gang, begged the judge and jury, in all sincerity, to sentence him to death. Johnson knew that those on California’s death row get individual cells and better telephone access, nicer contact-visit arrangements, and more personal-property privileges than ordinary inmates.

Ask Anyone

While surfing the web I accidentally uncovered the fact that a good friend actually makes her living running her own porn site. And this wasn’t just like, ‘See me and my Hubby get naughty!” It was seriously hard core stuff.
