Alison Des Forges
by Julia Hall
While I understand the editorial decision to associate my human rights work with that of Alison Des Forges (i.e. “Like her colleague in spirit Julia Hall, Alison Des Forges is among the most internationally well-known human rights activists our area can boast.”), the notion that I belong in Alison’s company is unwarranted (“Beyond Gunatanamo,” Artvoice v9n5). My children attended the public Montessori school in Buffalo that Alison founded. Her work in Rwanda distinguished her not only as the world’s leading authority on a modern day genocide, but as a fierce and loving protector of those Rwandans left to tell that horrific story. Alison’s intelligence, grace, work ethic, and commitment to her home city, Rwanda, Africa, and the world are unparalleled. She was and will always remain in a class by herself.
