The Week's Winners & Losers

Take This Job

Like a beacon of hope to disgruntled employees everywhere, a manager at a Taco Bell/KFC in Depew came up with an epic way to tell his bosses to shove it. On July 14, an angry “Adam” arranged the letters on the outdoor sign to not-so-subtly tender his resignation, reading: “I Quit—Adam F*** You : )”

Authentic Mexican Cuisine

A Mexican national who owned and operated seven restaurants in four states and WNY was sentenced on July 15 in Buffalo federal court to 46 months in prison for harboring upwards of 100 illegal immigrants. And there goes any chance of actually getting some decent Mexican food in this town.

Porn Store Enthusiasts

Let it be known to the shy patrons of some of the less-than-savory establishments of WNY that they should take extra caution to protect their privacy (shame) on the way out. Last week the Google Street car was spotted around town, taking a new round of pictures for its online (and oft-intrusive) library of maps.

Tagging

Fed up by an increase of graffiti on the Strip, on July 15 the Elmwood Village Association offered a $2,000 reward in exchange for information leading to the arrest of the taggers. Stuffy as the Elmwood crowd may be, they have a point. It’s not exactly like there’s a dearth of vacants here.

Only Bid Contracts

The ECHDC approved plans on July 20 for the first privately funded project on the waterfront, giving the greenlight to Benderson (big shocker there) to rehab the dilapidated Donovan State Office Building—a $30 million project. Moral of the story, folks: Give early and give often to your elected officials.

By the numbers...

Millions of dollars in surplus reported by County Executive Chris Collins in his release of midyear budget figures on July 18. County Comptroller Mark Poloncarz—his Democratic opponent in November—chalked up the surplus to $26.8 million in one-time and unxpected revenues, which reversed a potential $14 million deficit.

Highest temperature recorded at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, home to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s weather monitoring stations. Buffalo is one of only five cities in the United States with a population greater than 100,000 to have never officially recorded a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. It is joined by Anchorage (high of 91 degrees), Seattle suburbs Bellevue (96) and Everett (98), and Tampa (99). The last time Buffalo hit 99 degrees: August 26, 1948.

Millions of gallons per day each business would be allowed to withdraw from Lake Erie according to a bill passed by the Republican led Ohio Legislature but vetoed on July 15 by Gov. John Kasich. Conservationists and lawmakers derided the bill, which sought to undermine the Great Lakes Compact. New York and Pennsylvania have passed laws regulating water withdrawals of more than 100,000 gallons daily.
