Bread and Onions
by Anthony Chase
For Italian Americans who lived in Buffalo during the middle years of the 20th century, the West Side is a mythical landscape. Their memories of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s are brimming over with family, favorite menus, music—both sentimental and exuberant—and a litany of vivid characters who populated a West Side world, now gone.
Joey Giambra has kept his memories especially close and has chronicled them in his play, Bread and Onions, first written as a monologue in 1997, now expanded as a two-hander with music, to be performed on June 16 and 17 at 7pm at the Kavinoky Theatre on the D’Youville College campus.
Joey will be joined on stage by Dominic Chianese, best known as Uncle Jr. of television’s The Sopranos, as well as pianist James Calabrese and trumpeter Dennis Tribuzzi. The evening will begin with vocalist Mary Stahl, the James Calabrese trio, and Bobby Militello.
