Ever been out hiking in the woods and stumble across something odd, and wonder, “Why is this out here all by itself?” In The Bunker, five friends traveling deep in the woods come across a metal door in the ground, which turns out to be a gloomy, dusty time capsule. Inside, they find future artifacts from themselves, notes and articles and many unanswered questions. Included are letters to themselves telling them they will soon destroy the world. The only thing scarier than the end of the world is knowing you’re the one who caused it. I’m happy this hit digital comic series finally came to print. I commend digital artists and all of that “digital is the future, man,” mumbo jumbo. But this book needed a bigger audience and print is what gave it the exposure it rightly deserved. High concept science fiction in graphic novel form is hard to find, especially one as good as this one. Frightening and shocking would be cliché, though the intensity with which Fialkov writes is gripping and makes it hard to put down. The flip-flopping of who are the protagonists and who are the antagonists will rock your mind. Artist Joe Infurnari’s in-your-face art style ramps up the part diary, part contemporary setting of this chronicle. Will the future be picture-perfect, or is it a bleak house? It’s up to you to find out.
