The Golden Arch: Behr's Folly?

Last week the Buffalo News reported that attorney Laurence D. Behr had hired a Connecticut-based fundraising firm that specializes in Catholic causes to help him realize his five-year-old fantasy: to build a 700-foot golden arch on Buffalo’s waterfront, called the Arch of Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and International Shrine of the Holy Innocents. The pro-life shrine, according to Behr, should come in at no more than $100 million and would attract visitors from around the world. Sure it would. When he first proposed the idea in 2001, the socially conservative Buffalo News seemed supportive—for about three days, after which saner heads realized that Behr is nuts. Or is he? We asked some Buffalonians what they thought about it.

Do you think erecting a huge golden arch on Buffalo’s waterfront area is a good idea? Why? I think anything that brings people here is a good idea and it’s a worthwhile cause. I think they could probably come up with better things that will bring in more tourists but it’s a good start.

If you could build some oversized memorial on the waterfront, what would it look like and what would it memorialize? Maybe something specific to Buffalonians. Something that has to do with the history or Buffalo and the people here.

How would you raise money to build this memorial? Ideally I wouldn’t want to bring in an outsider. I think food is always a good idea; taking a little bit from every food sale from local restaurants.

Do you think erecting a huge golden arch on Buffalo’s waterfront area is a good idea? It would be one of the first things on the waterfront to be built but it’s a bit too conservative for a city like Buffalo. It’s a good start but I don’t think it’s in the right direction. It’s too one-sided, too focused on one idea. It needs to be something that’s more unifying between everyone in the city.

If you could build some oversized memorial on the waterfront, what would it look like and what would it memorialize? Something that reflects every aspect of the city. This city is very segregated and it needs something that will really bring everyone together. I think it should be something that’s reminiscent of the Pan-Am Exposition, because this city was supposed to be so much back then.

How would you raise money to build this memorial? I think that every business would at least give some money towards it. People from other states and countries that are from here might also donate money for it.

Do you think erecting a huge golden arch on Buffalo’s waterfront area is a good idea? I have mixed feelings about it. As long as they don’t commercialize it, Buffalo is a very unique city. We don’t want a Holiday Inn or other commercial businesses coming in. It should be local businesses that run it.

If you could build some oversized memorial on the waterfront, what would it look like and what would it memorialize? I think something that represents the architecture here would be good.

How would you raise money to build this memorial? Probably through the taxes in the city.
