Stagefright

Movie star Tab Hunter (pictured above) was at Rochester’s George Eastman House a couple of weeks ago to talk about his life and Hollywood career. One of his favorite movies, the 1958 western Gunman’s Walk, was also screened. Hunter is promoting his best selling autobiography Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star which came out last October. He will turn 75 next July.

This year will be the 25th anniversary of Curtain Up!, the official annual opening of the theater season in Western New York. The event is scheduled for Friday, September 29.

Bill Schmidt’s play, Visitations or The Elephant on the Hill, will be read on Monday, June 12 at 8pm at Rust Belt Books. Donations will be accepted to benefit The Subversive Theatre Collective. Billed as a “political confusion in nine scenes,” the reading will feature Mary McMahon, Joe Demerly, Timothy Finnegan, Sarielys Mathos, Eric Rawski and James Fauvell.

Road Less Traveled Productions’ New Play Workshop will present its 2005-06 showcase productions next week at the Andrews Theater. Cindy Darling’s Logo will be presented on June 5th, directed by Kyle LoConti, starring Chris Critelli, Andy Moss, Kelly Jakiel, Andy Herr and Peter Palmisano. Darryl Schneider’s The War Room will be presented on June 6, directed by Thomas Dooney, starring Peter Jaskowiak, Abby Holland, Kate Olena, Jermain Cooper and Rick Lattimer.

Barbara Link LaRou, Eileen Dugan and Kelli Bocock-Natale will star as The Sisters Rosensweig in next season’s Jewish Repertory Theatre of WNY production of the popular Wendy Wasserstein play. The company will also present Brooklyn Boy, starring Peter Palmisano, Norm Sham, Kelly Meg Brennan, Debbie Pappas and Saul Elkin.

MusicalFare will kick off its 2006-07 season with Sisters of Swing: The Andrews Sisters Musical. Directed by Doug Weyand, the production will star Debbie Pappas, Kathy Weese, Kelly Meg Brennan, Todd Benzin and Phil Farugia.

Buffalo United Artists will present Falsettos in concert, a one-night special event to benefit the company on Wednesday, June 28 at the Andrews Theater. Directed by Kelli Bocock Natale, with musical direction by Eric Alsford, the production will star Chris Kelly, Marc Sacco, Kurt Guba, Ryan O’Byrne, Mary Moebius, Kerrykate Abel and Loraine O’Donnell Gray.

Buffalo State alum Richard Ruiz will be starring in the national tour of Sweet Charity which begins in September in San Jose, starring Molly Ringwald. The production will play Shea’s February 6-11. Ruiz made his professional debut in BUA’s production of Jeffrey.

The fabulous Cass Morgan (pictured below) who starred last year in Studio Arena’s production of Ring of Fire is one of the authors and original stars of the musical revue Pump Boys and Dinettes which premiered on Broadway in 1982. Now Pump Boys will be the final offering of Studio Arena’s 2006-07 season, to be directed by Jason Edwards, who also starred in Ring of Fire. Studio Arena’s season will now also include Richard Greenberg’s Three Days of Rain (October 20-November 12) directed by artistic director Kathleen Gaffney, and Charles Ludlam’s The Mystery of Irma Vep (March 16-April 7). During the holiday season, the theater will present the world premiere of The Fourth Wise Man, a play that Gaffney is adapting for the stage in collaboration with Tom Fontana. Michele Costa will create Bunraku style puppets for the production.
