Boom Round 3 Week 3: Notic vs. The Gavin Petrie Band

Congratulations to Round 3 Week 2 Winners, Leon and The Forklifts!

CONGRATULATIONS to Leon and the Forklifts for collecting the most online votes this past week. With that, they secure a spot in our next B.O.O.M. live showdown, scheduled for Friday, January 15, 2010 at Nietzsche’s.

This week, we’re featuring Leon and the Forklifts and Ball Cheeze Psychotics in our online battle of the bands. Visit boom.artvoice.com to check out their music and cast a vote for the band you like best.

For you dear readers who’ve been living under a rock, here’s how our contest works. Solo artists and bands visit boom.artvoice.com and register by answering a brief questionnaire, like the ones below. They also submit a couple songs and a photo.

From the pile of submissions we receive, two acts are chosen each week, and they appear in the print edition of the paper. These two then compete head to head in our virtual concert hall—where visitors to Artvoice.com can listen to the music, and then, with the click of a mouse, cast one vote for the contestant he or she prefers.

Thus, each week produces one winner. At the end of four weeks, we arrive at the four bands that then square off in a live showdown, where each audience member receives one ballot to cast for his or her favorite. At the end of that night, one band emerges victorious and wins a spot in the B.O.O.M. Grand Finale, the big live concert battle that pits the four winners of our preliminary shows against one another. That night, one band will join the ranks of past B.O.O.M. Grand Champions Dali’s Ghost and TypeRelevant.

Bands are encouraged to get out the vote any way they can, short of stuffing the ballot box. Our IT guy has detected such instances in the past, and it’s never been taken lightly. If you’re caught cheating, you can be disqualified. And there’s nowhere to appeal our decision.

Also, musicians, there’s still time to enter B.O.OM.. Visit boom.artvoice.com today, to find out how. Tune in next issue to see who won this week’s match, and who’s up to bat.

Good luck this week to Notic and the Gavin Petrie Band. One of them will win a spot on the bill at Nietzsche’s. May the best band win.

When/where did the band form? Notic formed in the early days of 2009 at Café Aroma

Band Members: Justin Smith - guitar and vocals / Carlo Minchillo - drums / Kenneth Riley - bass

You might like us if you like: Breathing, kittens, sunshine, grandparents, or pillows

Recorded Releases: Self Titled EP (2009)

Best show you've played: It's hard to speak for the rest of the band but i am just happy to be playing out, hitting foreign eardrums.

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: Because we have worked really hard to develop our own unique flavor of audio symmetry, and we are very supportive of our colleagues. Winning the BOOM!! competition is probably one of the best ways to get exposure in the Western New York area. Fingers crossed!

When/where did the band form? Our band formed in Amherst, New York in 2006

Band Members: Gavin Petrie - keyboards, vocals / Jayme Kelly - drums / Corey Kertzie - aux. percussion / Sarah Petrie - vocals / Joe Quader - bass

You might like us if you like: You might like us if you like Medeski Martin and Wood, John Scofield, or Family Groove Company

Best show you've played: The best show we've ever played had to be at the Mohawk Place this fall. We were opening for EOTO (drummers from String Cheese Incident) and the brand new sound system took a while to warm up. By the time we went on the room was packed and everyone in the room boogied hard.

Worst show you've ever played: The worst show we've ever played had to be at Murphy's Tavern back in 2006. We were just starting out, and starting songs in the wrong keys and stupid things like that. But that's been fixed, don't worry!

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: We are one of the only bands in Buffalo playing original funk / jazz. Our band plays music that is technically demanding, with am intent to get people dancing! So come on out and check us out!
