Animal Protection Law
by Hans Heckelman
I am writing in the hope of seeing the Downed Animal Protection Law (A4615/S427) passed. Modeled on the Humane Farming Association’s groundbreaking law in California, this law would outlaw the transportation and marketing of farm animals too sick or injured to stand or walk. In addition to protecting cattle, this law would ban the marketing of nonambulatory sheep and pigs.
It is a travesty to know of young calves chained to a “dog house,” to know only a week of life. So much for eating veal.
