The Week's Winners & Losers
Winning UglyAn analysis of facial structure and symmetry by researchers at Ursinus College concluded on Sept. 8 that the Buffalo Bills are the most attractive team in the NFL. Normally I’d insert a quip about the team still looking pretty damn ugly on the field, but after the Bills’ 41-7 win in KC, they’re pretty sexy. |
ShamelessnessBuffalo Mayor Byron Brown provoked outrage at a ceremony on Sept. 11 by dedicating eight new city fire trucks on which he’d had his name inscribed. Historically, that honor is reserved for fallen firefighters. Under pressure, the mayor has agreed to remove his name from the new trucks. |
Trans-BanditsBuffalo police are on the lookout for a man dressed in woman’s clothing and a wig who allegedly robbed an HSBC Bank on Sept. 12. Since 2007 there have been at least three other cases of bank robberies by men in drag. So, is this a good getaway tactic or are our criminials just into cross-dressing? |
Grrrrrl PowerTired of always having to play as male characters in video games, a 14-year-old North Tonawanda woman successfully lobbied EA Sports to include female hockey players in its NHL 12 game, released on Sept. 12. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that Buffalo gals don’t know how to puck. Rock on, ladies. |
Arguments Against GodThe Amherst skeptics group Center for Inquiry unveiled a new billboard in Niagara Falls on Sept. 12, part of a nationwide ad campaign promoting atheism and claiming there is no God. I was totally on board but just two days later, leaked nude pictures of Scarlett Johansson appeared online. You can’t explain that. |
By the numbers...
95
Foreign objects left in New York patients during medical procedures in 2009 according to a new statewide hospitals report by the nonprofit Niagara Health Quality Coalition. Cases included a guidewire left in a patient’s abdomen after a catheter placement and a Post-it note-sized piece of plastic left in a throat. |
250
Students formerly housed at local hotels that will move into university housing thanks to the Sept. 13 opening of the new $44 million apartment complex at Grant and Letchworth Street on the Buffalo State campus. The apartments will consist of 125 four-bedroom units and house a mix of upperclassmen and graduate students. |
1
Votes separating Ward Councilman Geoffrey Szymanski and Pastor Dion Watkins in the Democratic primary for Lackawanna mayor. The Erie County Board of Elections unofficial tally on Sept. 14 had Szymanski leading with 1,468 votes to Watkins’ 1,467 votes, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. The race will likely be decided by absentee ballots. |
