Allegany Artisans Open Studio Tour this weekend

As the cool autumn winds begin to blow, preparations are again underway for the 23rd Annual Allegany Artisans Open Studio Tour, to be held October 16 and 17, 10am-5pm. This is a banner year, with 47 artisans exhibiting and demonstrating in 38 different studios, which are scattered throughout the scenic rolling hills of Allegany County.

Now an Allegany County cultural tradition, the studio tour has grown in popularity. Hundreds of art seekers from throughout Western New York motor to the studios to view the crafts, watch demonstrations, munch on refreshments, see the last of the leaves and maybe do some Christmas shopping. As usual, visitors to each studio may sign up for the free raffle for a gift certificate for the artisan of their choice.

Diversity and quality marks this event. Handcrafts include paintings in oil and watercolor and scratchboard, ceramics, jewelry, metalwork, dolls, sculpture (in wax, wood, metal, and clay) furniture, candles, fabric arts and clothing, glass works, stuffed animals, quilts, antique lampshades, tin can art, and mirrors. Each artisan’s style is unique and ranges from traditional to contemporary. Each studio is also highly individual, some in commercial buildings, as in Alfred and Andover, and many others nestled in country home settings with beautiful views.

To obtain a free directory with studio listings and detailed directions (now with Google maps), visit the website at www.alleganyartisans.com or call (800) 836-1869.
