The presumptive vacancy for Erie County Republican chairman is just one of many created by Tuesday’s election:

• Erie County’s charter says that the Legislature chooses Mark Poloncarz’s successor as Erie County comptroller. State law says that Governor Andrew Cuomo fills the vacancy, if he wishes to do so, as he did when Kathy Hochul vacated the clerk’s office. We believe state law trumps local law. In any case, if Chris Jacobs wins the Erie County clerk race, then his Democratic opponent, Maria Whyte, may be a candidate for that seat. Whyte gave up her seat on the Erie County Legislature to run for clerk.

• If he wins, Jacobs will surrender his at-large seat on Buffalo’s school board. That seat could be taken by one of the district board members, whose replacement would, in turn, be made by the board from a list of candidates who live in that district and submit resumes. Or the board could choose a new at-large member from a citywide pool of applicants.

• Sharon LoVallo’s victory in the race for Erie County Family Court leaves a vacancy on Buffalo City Court. As it happens, there were two candidates for city court on Tuesday who didn’t make the cut: incumbent David Manz and challenger Gillian Brown. Not to mention a host of other politically connected lawyers who will line up to kiss the ring of Deputy Mayor Steve Casey in the weeks ahead.

• Bet on Cheektowaga’s Tom Mazur to succeed Barbara Miller-Williams as chair of the Erie County Legislature.
