The Week's Winners & Losers

Lessons Learned

Thanks to a pot of funds from failed attempts to lure big-box development in the past and the granting of final approval by the State Assembly on March 28, the ECHDC can move on to the next stage of Canalside, a $21 million historical recreation of the Erie Canal and ice rink. Finally, development moves in the right direction.

The Right not to Get Shot

Hundreds wearing hooded sweatshirts marched in downtown Buffalo on March 28 to protest the shooting of Trayvon Martin—a fashion statement local wingnut Tom Bauerle likened to the KKK. It’s funny to hear right wingers attempt to deflect the racial component of this tragedy as though it was merely an accident brought on by fashion choices.

Vital Signs

After two deflating losses last weekend and an early three-goal deficit left Buffalo’s playoff hopes for dead, the Sabres delivered a gutsy comeback to beat the Toronto 6-5 on April 3 and keep their postseason dreams alive. Just when you right this team off for good and start thinking NFL Draft—boom, two goals and a breath of life.

Young at Heart

Buffalo’s soon to be exiled congresswoman Louise Slaughter made the news on April 3 after a fall in New York City left her with a broken leg. However, more incredibly: today I learned the fiery inside-trading activist is 82 years young! I know it’s rude to talk of a lady’s age, but was anyone aware that she was born in the 1920’s? Mind blown.

Easy Marks

On April 3, the day his wife pled guilty to federal bank charges for her role in a $564,000 counterfeit check scheme, Buffalo Common Council leader Demone Smith claimed that his wife was the unfortunate victim on an online scam. In that case... DEAREST ONE, I AM MAKING OF THIS CONTACT ON BEHALF OF PrINCE Nkudukwe...

By the numbers...

Millions of dollars in overtime costs rung up by state workers in 2011 according to figures released on April 4 by State comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. In all New York employees put in over 12.2 million dollars worth of overtime—led by a security worker at a Psychiatric Hospital in Poughkeepsie who raked in an addition $123,000 on top of his regular $61,830 salary.

143,000

Megawatts of additional wind-power New York has the potential to develop according to an agreement between the state and the Obama Administration on March 30 to help develop off-shore wind farms more quickly. In total the report states the Great Lakes have the capacity to generate 700 gigawatts of energy.

Man games lost by the Buffalo Sabres this season—ranked ninth highest in the NHL—and due to rise again with the news that defenseman Tyler Myers will miss the rest of the regular season with a foot injury. This comes just days after losing defenseman Christian Ehrhoff for the rest of the season.
