Film Now Playing

M (1931) presented this week by the Buffalo Film Seminars

Opening:

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW—Archaeologists search for lost treasure in the catacombs beneath Paris. Labor Day is just not a holiday Hollywood cares about. Starring Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman and Edwin Hodge. Directed by John Erick Dowdle (Devil). Flix, Maple Ridge, Regal Elmwood, Regal Niagara Falls, Regal Quaker, Regal Transit, Regal Walden Galleria, Transit Drive-In

THE NOVEMBER MAN—Spy stuff with Pierce Brosnan as an operative called out of retirement to deal with a troublesome former pupil. Co-starring Luke Bracey and Olga Kurylenko. Directed by Roger Donaldson (Cocktail). Flix, Maple Ridge, Regal Elmwood, Regal Niagara Falls, Regal Transit, Regal Walden Galleria, Regal Quaker.

A SUMMER’S TALE—Re-release of Eric Rohmer’s 1996 Conte d’été, in which a shy math student finds himself for the first time overwhelmed by female attention. Starring Melvil Poupaud, Amanda Langlet and Gwenaëlle Simon.

ETC:

M (Germany, 1931)—Fritz Lang’s visceral thriller about a hunt for a child killer that unites the police and the criminal underworld of Berlin. Peter Lorre became an international star as the murderer, a victim of his compulsions, but it’s Lang’s film: look at his depiction of a city falling under the sway of fascism and you’ll understand why he fled Germany a year later. Presented by the Buffalo Film Seminars. Tues 7 pm. Amherst

MARY POPPINS (1964)—Live action Disney at its slickest. It hasn’t aged terribly well (Dick van Dyke’s attempt at a Cockney accent is painful), but it’s tuneful and Julie Andrews shares the screen with lots of venerable (mostly British) character actors, including Glynis Johns, Hermione Baddeley, Elsa Lanchester, Arthur Treacher, Reginald Owen, Ed Wynn and Jane Darwell. Thurs Aug 28 7:30 pm. Riviera

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (2004)—The musical version. Sorry to disappoint all the Lon Chaney, Claude Reins and Herbert Lom fans out there. Starring Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson. Directed by Joel Schumacher (The Lost Boys). Thurs Sept. 4 7:30 pm. Riviera

ROAD TO NINJA: NARUTO THE MOVIE—The ninth film based on the anime series Naruto (and the first with story by series creator, Masashi Kishimoto). Directed by Hayato Date. Fri-Sat 7 pm. Screening Room

STOOGEFEST XXIII—But who’s counting? Sat 7:30 Riviera

SUPER DUPER ALICE COOPER—The once and future king of shock rock gets his due in this flashy Canadian documentary. Fri 9:15 pm. Screening Room
