Mariage a Mendoza

Established film distributors in recent years have largely gotten out of the business of acquiring foreign language films. That doesn’t mean that lovers of subtitles are being entirely abandoned, as smaller companies take advantage of digital technology to bring movies to niche audiences.

In conjunction with Specticast, Williamsville’s the Screening Room is offering a month-long series of recent French comedies, all based in sunny climates that will be especially welcome to viewers who can only afford to get away from this especially snowy winter for a few hours at a time. This week’s film, Pauline Detective, takes place at a resort on the Italian Riviera. Sandrine Kiberlain stars as Pauline, the publisher of a tabloid true detective magazine, who has been taken on vacation by her sister to get over being dumped by her boyfriend. Unable to just settle in and relax, Pauline convinces herself that there is a mystery afoot at the resort and sets about solving it. It plays tonight at 7:30pm, Friday and Saturday at 9:15pm, and Sunday at 5pm.

Next week’s film is Mariage a Mendoza, also known as Welcome to Argentina. Nicolas Duvauchelle and Philippe Rebbot (who also wrote the screenplay with director Edouard Deluc) star as Antoine and Marcus, brothers who arrive in Buenos Aires for the wedding of their cousin. They plan to spend a few days driving across the country and visiting vineyards while they’re here. Marcus is hoping to get his young brother over some marital difficulties, but as Antoine will soon learn his elder sibling has problems of its own. Mariage a Mendoza will have one screening only, next Thursday, February 13 at 7:30pm.
