A man wakes up in a field, almost naked, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He hears a phone ring cryptically nearby, and a burly, chain-smoking, creatively profane Bible salesman crashes through Canadian tall grass and forces him, at gunpoint, to get into a car. From there, things only get crazier and more intense as a group of bikers faces off against a group of geeks for possession of the man, leaving a string of bodies in their wake. Ed Brisson, one of the emerging great talents in the comic book industry, gives us a story with a break-neck pace, twisted humor, and quantum physics without ever losing sight of his character’s core. Simon Roy’s artwork is his signature beautiful-yet-grotesque style that keeps the story grounded despite the absurdity, but also manages to keep the dark humor ever present. This collection shows that both of these multi-talented creators are going to be true forces to be reckoned with in the growing, genre-fueled independent comic book scene and I for one can’t wait to see what is next from each. The Field is a fun, dark, fast-paced story that doesn’t forget to be smart and thought-provoking. I guarantee you’ll want to reread it immediately.
