Hospital Closings: For or Against?

In its effort to balance the costs of health care across the state, the New York State Health Commission has recommended a series of hospital closings, mergers and restructuring across the state. No region is more affected by the provisions than Western New York. Employees and patients at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital in Buffalo and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Cheektowaga are rallying together in opposition to the recommendations, which will automatically become law on January 1, 2007, unless they are rejected by both houses of the state legislature. With as many as a third of the 60,000 hospital beds in the state empty at any given time, New York State’s current governor and governor-elect both support the provisions of this report. What about the people who live here?

Occupation: Coffee shop shift manager

When was the last time you or someone you know was in the hospital? It was probably a week and a half ago, my girlfriend was in Millard Fillmore Suburban, and it took a really long time. It was late at night. There was no one there. It took about three or four hours. She had the flu really bad, and they had to hook her up to an IV but it took two hours just to get her in the room.

Do you think the Catholic health system should have to abide by the state government’s recommendations? I feel if they can get their own funding they should be able to stay open…It’s kind of getting ridiculous how many hospitals are closing around the area.

If Millard Fillmore closes, what do you think ought to happen to that building? I’d say rent out the building to other companies, try keeping it open as a hospital or emergency service area.

Occupation: Chef

Residence: Lancaster

When was the last time you or someone you know was in the hospital? A year ago I was hit by a car, and I was in ECMC for a month, and the care was excellent.

Do you think the Catholic health system should have to abide by the state government’s recommendations? Yes, I think all hospitals should abide by the same regulations across the board.

If Millard Fillmore closes, what do you think ought to happen to that building? Tough question. I’d probably just tear it down and put up apartments or something. What else are you gonna do with it? It’s a huge building. I don’t think it should close in the first place, but people rely on all the hospitals. Even though the occupancy in beds has come down a little bit, it reflects the population of Buffalo, too.

Name: Alan Delmar

Occupation: Inspector

Residence: Tonawanda

When was the last time you or someone you know was in the hospital? It’s been a while. Last time was my ex-girlfriend. She was down at OLV [Our Lady Victory], and it was very good. They treated her very well.

Do you think the Catholic health system should have to abide by the state government’s recommendations? No, I think you can reduce beds without closing an entire hospital.

If Millard Fillmore closes, what do you think ought to happen to that building? I don’t know, some of that complex is only about 15 years old. I mean, there’s part of it that’s older, but a lot of extensions have been built in the last 15, 20 years…I really am opposed to them closing it. But, if it has to be used as something else, possibly a long-term care center.

Name: Peter Kamien

Occupation: Student

Residence: Alden

When was the last time you or someone you know was in the hospital? Last time I was in the hospital was Millard Fillmore Suburban, and it was because I broke my arm. They were good then. My dad was in Roswell Park for a year, for leukemia.

Do you think the Catholic health system should have to abide by the state government’s recommendations? No, not if the government doesn’t have any control over them.

If Millard Fillmore closes, what do you think ought to happen to that building? Some type of medical function, because if that’s what it’s designed for it’s stupid to let it go to waste like other buildings in Buffalo that are empty.
