The Week's Winners & Losers
Statler TowersIt’s offensive enough that the grand old building lay in mothballs, but on April 1, for the second time in X months, stonework fell onto the street below. We’re all for preserving our architectural treasures, so long as they, you know, don’t kill anybody. |
Climate DenialHaving already logged the shortest winter in Buffalo history, record temps hit WNY on three straight days, including a balmy 84 degrees on April 3. We’re not saying its related to climate change—but to use Glenn Beck logic—prove to us its not, wingnuts. |
JoyridesA 15-year-old boy got the most out of his youthful offender status on April 4, leading West Seneca police in a high-speed chase down the Thruway. After striking two cars, the high speed chase ended in a crash near Dunkirk. Luckily, nobody was hurt. |
Carl PaladinoBuffalo developer and Tea Party afficionado went all in on April 5, announcing at Ellicott Square to a crowd of hundreds his entrance as a Republican in the race for Governor. Paladino has committed to spending $10 of his own money in the race. |
The LoonieGet ready for the northern rush. On April 6 the Canadian dollar surpassed the American in value by a fraction of a penny, the first time since July 2008. If this trend continues, it would be a boom for Buffalo retail but a bitch for Buffalo shoppers. |
By the numbers...
6
Number of Division titles captured by the Buffalo Sabres, prior to this season, most recently in the 2006-2007 season. With the Sabres 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers on April 6, they secured a guarantee of at least the third seed in the playoffs. |
4
Percent pay increase received by NY unionized state employees on April 1. Gov. David Paterson asked public unions to forgo contracted pay raises to save $400 million and alleviate the state’s $9.2 billion budget deficit. Paterson noted that the approx. 180,000 state employees have already received a 9% raise over the past three years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, public sector workers earn on average 41% more per hour than private workers. |
27.5
Percent tariff on imported Chinese goods in legislation written by NY Senator Chuck Schumer. The bipartisan proposal, announced on April 5 in Clarence, is a reaction to allegations of Chinese currency manipulation and would attempt to make American manufacturing more competitve. |
