Another Anchor For The Waterfront
Why not Wegmans? A Wegmans on the waterfront would help with many social issues such as a place for the Lower East Side to get proper nutrition instead of bodegas. It would provide a place to get an apple after 5pm, as Larry Quinn stated in your interview that was a problem (“Voices on the Waterfront,” Artvoice v9n31). Wegmans is a destination for many people. I know many people who love going just to wander the aisles. If they built a Wegmans that was similar to the one at Dick Road in Depew or Alberta Drive in Amherst, many of the downtown businesses would have a place to get food, lunch, supplies, etc. They could support more of South Buffalo and the entire West Side. The small businesses that would sprout up alongside of it would benefit from the constant foot traffic generated by a necessity of life—food, not bait and tackle. We are living in a time where money is scarce and hobbies are second to survival. Why not contribute a Wegmans to the area, they aren’t eyesores and I’m sure they would have no problem going along with historical preservation. I feel a grocery store like Wegmans in downtown Buffalo would do a lot of the area.
