ETC:

CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)—Like Night of the Living Dead, this is a classic of low-budget regional filmmaking from an industrial filmmaker who (unlike George Romero) never made another movie. A woman survives a car wreck, but is trapped in a small town where she is haunted by apparitions. Free and open to the public. 7:30pm Mon. Sugar City Arts Collaborative, 19 Wadsworth St.

EGGSPLOITATION—Documentary examining health and safety issues associated with young women who have donated their eggs for infertility treatments. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Jennifer Lahl. 7pm Thu Oct. 21. Hamburg Palace Theatre, 31 Buffalo St, Hamburg (649-2295 / www.hamburgpalace.com)

THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959)—Eccentric millionaire Vincent Price offers five people $10,000 each if they can spend the night in his haunted mansion. With Carolyn Craig, Richard Long, Elisha Cook Jr. and Carol Ohmart. Directed by William Castle (Mr. Sardonicus). 6:30, 8:30pm Fri—Thurs HD Video Café, 5445 Transit Rd, Williamsville (688-4933 / hdvideocafe.com); also 7pm Tue, 1pm Wed, Lancaster Opera House, 21 Central Avenue, Lancaster (www.LancOpera.org)

THE LAST DETAIL (1973)—Jack Nicholson gives one of his strongest performances in this somewhat forgotten film by Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude, Shampoo). As a grizzled navy petty officer assigned to escort a young sailor (Randy Quaid) to prison on a trumped-up charge, he and his partner decide to show the kid a good time before he goes away. Presented as part of the Buffalo Film Seminar. 7pm Tue. Film and Arts Center, 639 Main St. (855-3022).

NOSFERATU (GERMANY, 1922)—F. W. Murnau’s uncredited adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of the great early examples of German expressionism in film, as well as being a properly creepy little tale. Max Schreck made his way into film history entirely on the basis of this role as the misshapen bloodsucker. 6, 8pm Fri-Thu. HD Video Café, 5445 Transit Rd, Williamsville (688-4933 / www.hdvideocafe.com)

SABERFROG— This locally produced feature is a dark comedy about an aging slacker who is told by voices in his head to look up some old friends. Starring John Karyus and Liz Mariani. Writer-director Curt Markham will be in attendance. www.saberfrog.com. 7pm Sat. Squeaky Wheel, 712 Main St (884-7172 / www.squeaky.org)

THE WICKER MAN (1974)—Not to be confused with the Nicolas Cage remake, this is the original cult horror film starring Edward Woodward as a straitlaced British policeman who encounters a pagan society on a remote island. Co-starring Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Britt Ekland and Ingrid Pitt. Directed by Robin Hardy. 8pm Wed. The Screening Room, Northtown Plaza in Century Mall, 3131 Sheridan Drive, Amherst (837-0376 / www.screeningroom.net)
