THE LAST DETAIL (1973)—Jack Nicholson gives one of his strongest performances in this somewhat forgotten film by Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude, Shampoo). As a grizzled navy petty officer assigned to escort a young sailor (Randy Quaid) to prison on a trumped-up charge, he and his partner decide to show the kid a good time before he goes away. NOSFERATU (GERMANY, 1922)—F. W. Murnau’s uncredited adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of the great early examples of German expressionism in film, as well as being a properly creepy little tale.
