Launched in San Francisco, the Dodos began life as the Dodobird, a solo project for guitarist Meric Long. Upon discovering guitar finger picking, Long yearned to integrate his guitar style with manic experimental percussion. Meeting metal drummer Logan Kroeber, the band became the Dodos and the duo’s improvised songs became the basis of their debut, Beware Of the Maniacs. The success of the album gained the attention of French Kiss Records, who released their second album, Visiter, which has received great acclaim since its release last month. Although likely to be pegged as a “freak folk” act, the band is much more expansive than what’s often found in that genre’s cliches. The Dodos perform at Mohawk Place on Friday (April 11) at 10pm. Opening is Rochester/Buffalo folk band Auger, who will be releasing their debut full length that evening, as well as Nick Gordon, whose solo project is light years away from his role as guitar player in London Vs. New York.
