In With The New
by Ellie Corcoran
I’m getting old. I may not look old or act old, but chronologically it’s here.
And like many citizens my age, I can’t move away, nor do I want to. One of my three sons and his family are here, my friends are here, my husband’s job is here, and whatever is left of my life is here. It’s not right that, with the exception of a few, the politicians have virtually forced people out of New York with high taxes, lack of jobs, self-interest groups, and complete lack of empathy for senior citizens and others who want to remain here. We need reformers and government officials who care about our interests. We need servants, not dictators, who truly want to be public servants, and who realize we don’t have the luxury of moving, and who will do what it takes to keep our children and grandchildren here. We need servants who are selfless and also desire positive change.
Two years ago, I decided to stop complaining and do my part. I was determined not to vote for the same officials who’ve done nothing or very little to improve our plight.
I decided name recognition meant nothing, and decided to work hard and do what I could to change the political scene in this area. I volunteered for Primary Challenge. If a new face and name appeared on the political arena, I studied their agenda. If I was convinced of their desire to put the citizens above their own political interest, I passed out flyers, made phone calls, sent emails, and did whatever else I could.
There will be new faces on the political scene this fall, and others will follow. Give them a chance. I’d like to stay.
